The soundtrack album for Danny Boyle's new low budget viral epidemic/zombie flick is an odd beast, to say the least. It is predominantly comprised of short snippets of soundscape that work best within the context of the film, helping to add a breadth of emotional disturbance to the images unfolding on the screen. While most of the 'tracks' on this soundtrack clock in well under 3 minutes and manifest themselves as moody instrumentals, there are a few bona fide pop tracks tossed in for good measure and added effect. But let's start at the beginning, shall we? Actually the first track is called 'The Beginning' and it's a hodgepodge of static, radio station garble (you know, the sounds that occur when you twist the radio dial repeatedly to the right, thus skimming over every station thus getting hit with a little bit of each station), and ambient noize. It has a rather unnerving effect as it goes from the chaotic to the serenity in the blink of an eye.The second track is simply titled 'Rage' and it lives up to its namesake, being wrought from skirling guitars, pounding, almost tribalistic drums, and throbbing basslines. With 'The Church' (many of the song titles refer to actual scenes in the film, by the way) composer John Murphy makes wonderful use of near silence to create eerie mood shifts, often proving the age old adage that less can often be more, though outside the context of the film some of his spatial excursions come off a bit dull and far beyond the realms of chill. To wit, 'The Church' is really nothing more than barely audible sub harmonic throbbles of bass, all tone that works on an almost primal level. It's rather boring standing by itself, but during the scene that it accompanies in the film it works wonders on your psyche.'
Jims Parents (Abide With Me)' is an a cappella choral piece that is at once haunting and heartfelt and bleeds into the short (42 seconds) 'Then There Were 2,' which is a cherubic little bit of sound that could easily be a few bars extracted from a recent Radiohead track-it has that melancholic minimalist feel. It shift directly into 'Tower Block,' which is altogether more aggressive, building to a whirling crescendo that is rife with pounding drums and buzzing guitars.' Taxi' is a wonderfully beguiling number, taking Bach's 'Ave Maria' and wrapping it in some warm, almost playful keyboard washes. It creates a feeling of warmth and safety, which is quickly dashed by the throbbing ominousity of 'The Tunnel,' which like the aforementioned 'Tower Block,' is all crescendoing guitars and pummeling drum rhythms.
